The most recent available data on overall ACT performance indicates that the average composite ACT score was 20.8. Benchmark sectional ACT scores, defined as those that give students a 75% chance of passing a first-year college course in the corresponding subject area, have been set at 18 English, 22 math, 22 reading, and 23 science. Among students in the United States who took the ACT, 61% met or exceeded the benchmark in English, 44% in reading, 41% in math, and 36% in science. These general benchmarks of college readiness, however, are almost always insufficient for acceptance to highly selective universities. ACT scores of 27 and above are expected at "highly selective" universities, which ACT defines as having a majority student population that finished in the top 10% of their high school class. Typical ACT composite scores at prestigious universities can be much higher than 27, such as Harvard (33.5), Princeton (33), Columbia (32.5), and Duke (32). Prospective college students must realize that intense competition in university admissions mandates thorough test preparation.
